On Sept 15, 1942 the training range constructed with an official go ahead order on Jan. 7, 1942, was officially dedicated as "Camp George A. White" after the adjutant general of the Oregon National Guard, who had recently died.

The 299th and 300th Combat Engineers were stationed and trained in Oregon for the Normandy invasion.  These engineers formed the "Bulldozers" football team of 1943.
