Group Eyes New Football League

Two South King County businessmen hope to create a new ``developmental'' football league for men 18 and older.

Randy Mehl of Wealth Management Associates in Renton and Clyde Warehime of Mom's Country Kitchen in Kent envision a four- to six-team league for high-school graduates not immediately able to play college football or former college athletes. Warehime, who played linebacker for Washington State and in the World Football League, intends to coach a Kent-based Sharks.

Mehl and Warehime hope to assist in the development of three to five similar franchises in the Greater Seattle area. They suggest any community with three or more high schools and a municipal football stadium consider fielding a team.

Turnouts begin in April with the season opening in July and running into August or possibly September.

Proceeds go to local charities.

The Sharks were founded last year and intended to play in the Northwest Football League, a ``minor league'' organization with teams from Snohomish to Portland. But they pulled out less than two weeks before their scheduled season opener because of dissatisfaction with the NWFL's policy regarding insurance coverage, according to Mehl.

Anyone interested in franchise information should call Mehl at 226-7280 or Warehime at 852-2771 or 859-8618.
