2009 Northwest Player of the Year

Ron Strozyk

Defensive End

South Sound Shockers

Strozyk exploded in the 2009 season opener with 4 sacks against the Wenatchee Rams, eventual WFL champions.  The following week Ron recorded 3.5 sacks against the Spokane Wolfpack, eventual WFL runners-up.  His consistency throughout the season led him to 16.5 sacks on the season, 21 tackles for loss, 18 quarterback hurries and 4 forced fumbles in just 8 1/2 games.  He was a unanimous 1st Team selection in the WFL, the GNFA and as the GNFA Defensive Player of the Year.  Minor League Football News tabbed Ron an All-American and the Western Football News named Strozyk to it's 1st Team selections.  Ron also served as team Chaplain.

When asked who was more difficult to game plan against, Strozyk was again a unanimous choice by opposing coaches who were forced to double team Ron with tight ends and at times bring a third back out to contain the man Randy Worrell tabbed "Ron Stro-Sack" on his Comcast play-by-plays.  Ron was also utilized as a tight end in South Sounds' power set snagging his first TD reception of his career.

Strozyk graduated from Graceland University as a highly decorated defensive player earning Don Hansen's Football Gazette NAIA All-American in 2005 recording 18 tackles for loss, and as a 2-time All-Heartland of America Conference defensive end.  He was with the Omaha Beef of the United Indoor League in 2006.   In two seasons as a Shocker, Ron set team career records in sacks, tackles for loss, and quarterback hurries.

In one of the closest polls since the GNFA started the award; Ron Strozyk edged 2008 Player of the Year Russell Schneider by a single vote.
