The brainchild of Joe Woelfert, deputy sheriff to Harlan Callahan in
King County, the Greenwood Boys Club team was created as an outlet for
teenage boys who were ineligible or not attending high school.
Many of the teens were without male role models as fathers and uncles
were away at war. Sixteen-year-old George Kvalsund was named coach
of the team for the 1943 season after being ineligible for the Ballard
High Beavers.
Mickey Kelly broke the longest run of 82-yards for a TD against Ballard.
Following the season, Puget Sound Power & Light dontated the land for a
new field on North 86th Street and Fremont Avenue.
1943 Players included: Bob Ingram (C), Jim Cook (G), Ed Olson (G), Mike
Cassidy (T), Cliff Melnick (T), Jerry Logan (E), Bob Hopkins (E), George
Kvalsund (QB), Darrell Sherry (HB), Harry Miles (HB), Mickey Kelly (FB),
