This archive is still under research, any information is
appreciated! Salem Heights was formed of mostly former Salem high school players and after playing an alumni vs Salem High game, kicked off a series against the Chemawa Indian School in 1931. Chemawa won the first game by a point and then cancelled the return game claiming injuries. Chemawa was also slated to play Salem High in an annual Thanksgiving Day battle, but toyed with cancelling that game as well. This was the first time an Salem High Alumni team had formed since 1925 after playing the high schoolers since 1919. Confusion around Salem was caused by a team called the Oregon Mohawks that was being touted by Sterling Swegle. The Mohawk team was also billed as "Salem Independents" but never formed and was not associated with the Salem Heights Independent/Alumni team. The team would return as just an alumni squad in 1932. Don Sugai would become a standout middleweight wrestler in 1933-1934. Jimmy Nicholson went on to star in football and baseball at the University of Oregon from 1936-1938. He played with the alumni team in 1932 when he briefly dropped out of school, but returned to graduate in 1934. DO YOU HAVE INFORMATION TO CONTRIBUTE? CONTACT US! (email)
