Wes Fischer
Owner/Head
Coach/Player
Snohomish
County
1965 - 2013
A career that spanned nearly 50
years, Coach Fischer has been a shining example of
integrity, dedication, teamwork, and community service, and
earning the respect of the young men he mentored. The
results on the scoreboard were often overshadowed by the
good that was created off the field.
Wes was
baptized into the world of coaching and running minor league
football teams early on in his career which began as a
player for the Snohomish County Roughriders in 1965.
That team morphed into the
Everett Wildcats and Everett Ramblers in 1966 and by 1967 he
was getting his feet wet as an owner.
Together with
Richard Fleck, they ran the Ramblers before Fischer moved to
Colville, WA and played for a team there as well as the
Seattle Cavaliers.
By 1988 he was helping his
son Tom with an upstart team known as the Sky Valley
Vikings.
Tom wanted a new team
because the Everett Tramps were not competitive enough in
his mind and he wanted something more to offer players.
In 1997, together with wife
Donna, they renamed the team the Snohomish County Vikings
and set out to build a “program” that had the players at the
center.
Helping players find
direction after high school, or getting into junior
colleges, or just being a role model, many players looked to
the Fischer’s as their Viking Family.
Wes was
inducted into the American Football Association Hall of Fame
in 2004 but continued to coach another 10 seasons finally
topping the mountain by claiming the NWFL Championship in
2010.
Wes retired from the
Vikings following the 2013 season but not until they played
their final Charity Game which had become an annual event
and much anticipated weekend for players from around the
area.
Wes Fisher put a product on the field
that played hard between the whistles, but dedicated much
more to the community they represented when away from the
stadium lights.
