The Colts were created in 1901 and took their name from a favorite cigar manufactured at the factory team sponsor Harry Blumberg operated. Guard Ed Miller was a frequent source of objection from some opponents being the only black player on the team. Tom Pope scored on runs of 90 and 60 yards against Fort Missoula to lead the team to it's first victory and 29-0 rout of the soldiers. Later in 1904 as a fireman, he would be the first Missoulan to die in the line of duty when he was thrown by his team of horses enroute to a fire call. During 1902, some papers referred to the Colts as the "Missoula" Colts.
