Calvin Griggs
Wide Receiver
Oregon Thunderbolts
When the defending AFA National
Champions and #3 ranked team in the country feels they need
to get a former World League player and recent practice
squad member of the San Francisco 49ers to cover you just
days before the game, you know you are special to the semi
pro game.
Griggs, the former Washington State
Cougar and teammate of longtime NFL QB Drew Bledsoe, was
just that much of a threat. Coupled with QB Jack Stanley
(1987 Washington Redskins strike team), the Thunderbolt
receiver averaged over 21-yards per catch during the 1992
season. His 833
yards was at the time, 4th best all-time in the Greater
Northwest. Prior to joining the T-Bolts for the '92
campaign, Griggs was a late-June release from the Calgary
Stampeders training camp, his second stint with the CFL
team.
Calvin hauled in 8 touchdown receptions
during the 10-game season, while also averaging 27-yards per
punt return and tying a record for 4 punt returns for
scores. In the
West Coast Championship against the 12-1 Fresno Bandits and
the former 49er (John Robert Holland) covering him, he
caught 7 passes for 110-yards including a 43-yard score from
back up QB Mike Haaskamp. Mix in 3 kickoff returns for 47
yards and 2 punt returns for 15 yards, and Griggs accounted
for 172 all-purpose yards in the title game showdown.
Fresno escaped with the victory 27-17.
