Chester Murphy
Quarterback / Kicker
Multnomah Amatuer Athletic Club
A former Stanford University star
and captain of the 1900 team, Chester led the Winged M's to
a great 1903 season capped by a January 1904 victory over
the Reliance Athletic Club out of California then continued
his dominance over the 1904 season being handed the keys to
the team as head coach by Hall of Famer George McMillian.
The Winged M's started the season
1-1-1 including a loss to the University of California
Berkeley and a tie with Stanford University primarily due to
the absence of Murphy who did not make the trip to
California. When Murphy returned, the MAAC was
virtually an untouchable defensive team.
Facing the University of Oregon, it
was Chester Murphy setting up the winning touchdown with a
65-yard kickoff return to the Oregon 25 in a 7-0 victory
over the collegians.
Defensively struggling with
Willamette College in a game the clubmen won 6-0, it was
Murphy holding the edge with his tackling and kicking to pin
the college men deep in their own territory on booming punts
and it was his powerful leg again that booted the M's to
victory over the Oregon Ag College in a Christmas battle
winning 11-10. Before that winning kick, it was
Chester, who made one of many great open field ankle tackles
that prevented touchdowns after his teammates had been
flattened by viscous stiff-arms or hurdled by the college
runners.
The Winged M's would finish with a
9-2-1 record seven of eight victories would follow in
shut-out fashion to go with split games with the Seattle
Athletic Club, Murphy leading the charge in the New Years
1905 return win over the SAC.
Prior to the football season, "Chet"
Murphy was playing for the MAAC baseball team as a standout
infielder.
