Edward J. "Ed" Melbourne
(b. 1937 - d. 2006)
Tackle, Place Kicker
Seattle Ramblers / Edmonds Warriors
1959, 1961 - 1966
Ed Melbourne was born in Minneapolis, MN and graduated from
Queen Anne High School in Seattle, eventually starring as an
outstanding lineman with Western Washington College
(1955-1958) for four seasons after playing guard,
tackle and place kicker on the Fort Ord Warriors team out of
California while enlisted in the US Army.
Following his collegiate career, Melbourne embarked on a
seim pro career with the top teams in the region at the
time, the Seattle Ramblers and Edmonds Warriors.
Manning the trenches with legends such as Bill Castrow and
Dick Hard, it was easy to miss the skills Ed possessed when
viewed with an untrained eye. But it was much easier
to see his skills out all alone as the place kicker, where
the world would see each triumph and failure in broad
daylight. Melbourne kicked the final PAT of the
original Ramblers franchise in 1964, before joining up with
the Edmonds Warriors for the undefeated (12-0) 1965 team,
retiring in 1966.
Ed spent 42 1/2 years with the US Postal Service and was an
off-ice official for over 25 years with the Seattle Breakers
and Seattle Thunderbirds hockey teams. Ed and his wife
Carol coached Richmond Little League football and baseball
from 1966 on into the late 90's unitl he physically could
not keep going.
In 2002, Ed was honored by his Rambler teammates with his
induction into the Pacific Northwest Football Hall of Fame,
and in 2003 as a member of the 100th Anniversary Western
Washington All-Star Team as a First-Team tackle over the
past century.
