A member of the Archer-Wiggins League for "lightweight" teams, players averaged 135-145lbs.  Created by namesake Frank E. Watkins, the team was a force for many years in Portland in the early years.

The 1911 team was part of a record-setting 5-week long battle with the Portland Mohawks to determine the champion of the A-W League.  A tie game at the end of regulation required the teams to return to the field the following week and play again.  The two teams slugged it out in defensive 0-0 ties for four weeks into January and February of 1912 before the Mohawks broke the stalemate with a field goal to win the February 11th, 1912 game to claim the 1911 championship.

Eight months later, the 1912 season kicked off with F.E.W. returning to the championship game only to fall to Albina 6-0.  The season finale, played on January 5th, 1913 ended with a loss with Lents' Teed intercepted a pass and broke free for an 85-yard touchdown jaunt.  Teed nearly had another 100-yard interception, but was called out of bounds at midfield.

To start the 1913 season, F.E.W. took on Columbia Park, but with a 13-0 lead going into the third period, an arguement between players and spectators ensued, and the Columbia Park players walked off the field ending the game.

The 1913 team finally made it to the top by defeating the Albina Juniors over the course of two weeks to claim the A-W silver trophy.  To cap the season, some of the players from the defeated teams of the league joined forces with the Arleta Juniors for a Christmas Day battle that F.E.W. won 7-0.  Quarterback Frank Huelet, considered one of the toughest athletes to contend with on the field, was also a boxer for the Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club.

In September of 1914 it was announced that the Archer-Wiggins champions of 1913 would rebrand under the Western Amateur Athletic Association with hopes of joining the Pacific Northwest Amateur Athletic Union and challenge the likes of the Multnomah Winged M's.  When that effort failed to materialize, the team re-entered the A-W League in the 145lb division.

Once again the team would find itself in the multi-week battle for the league championship with Albina.  Albina and F.E.W. were fierce rivals, and as a writer for the The Oregonian noted, aside from the occassional fisticuffs amongst the players during the game, it was usually their fans who created the ruckus and threw hands with their rival fans.  After two weeks of scoreless outcomes, Albina again scored the 6-0 win, just as in 1912 during the third week to reclaim the title from Coach Warnie Woodworth who had taken his teams to the title game four consecutive seasons.  His championship series record those four years: 1-3-7.

All-League center Julius Hieberg was considered the best minor team center in Portland.  His football days were cut short to serve with the 91st Division during World War I and was a Portland firefighter until his death in 1945.
