Fort Canby was to be decomissioned, but found itself resurrected when World War II broke and coastal defense forces were called up. Captain Faye Stewart coach of the D Battery football team sought approval from Colonel Bates to allow the E Battery team to combine as a full Fort representative to take on Fort Lewis teams.
