Herbert "Bert" Kerrigan
Quarterback
Multnomah Athletic Club
Kerrigan started off 1901 not with a bang, but a break.
A broken leg suffered in the New Year's Day game between
Multnomah and Salem to cap the 1900 season in a 0-0 tie
that left the Capital Athletic Club with a counter-claim
to the Northwest title. That did not set well with
Bert or the Multnomah's. But, true to the nature
of the gritty 21-year old, Bert bounced back and by May
was broad jumping over 20 feet as one of the top 2
leapers in the state of Oregon.
At full speed in
October, Kerrigan was back at his quarterback spot with
the Winged M's and named team captain. He was praised
for his generalship in the 16-6 victory over the
University of Washington Huskies by sportswriters and
was again sought out for interview in Eugene following
the first of two victories over the webfoots of the
University. Bert led Multnomah to seven straight
victories and the highest scoring offense in the region,
but New Year's Day struck again, ushering in a
heart-wrenching 6-0 defeat at the hands of Reliance of
San Francisco. A fumbled punt behind the goal line
the only score of the day.
Kerrigan was
praised for his running and leadership skills once again
and touted as the best athlete in the Northwest.
Four weeks later, Jan 28, 1902, Kerrigan broke the
American indoor record for the high dive (jump) with 6'
7/8".
