Joseph Harker Smith
Kicker / Fullback
Multnomah Athletic Club Winged M's
Captain of the undisputed Northwest Club Champions, "the
only Joe" as he was known throughout the sports world
because he "had the remarkable ability to deliver the
goods for the team in a pinch", saw his kicking be the
difference in most of the games played in 1893. He
may have been noted for kicking, but was also a solid
runner and tackler for the M's.
Be his
contribution through running the ball, kicking goals or
flipping the field and giving opponents the long trudge
through the muddy gridiron, all eyes were on Joe when
his talents were called as he led Multnomah to a 6-0
record and victories over Seattle and Tacoma to claim
the crown.
Smith wasn't just a gridiron phenom,
he was also a star for the MAC in baseball, rugby,
track, billiards and the club bowling team. The
following year, he and Fred Andrews even reached the PNA
finals in tennis.
