The Marmots were an early 1930's team playing in the Seattle "lightweight" divisions and made up of Japanese-Americans.  The 1935 team played in a weight restricted league with a 135lb limit plus two players who could be under 140lb and one player under 150lbs.  In 1936, the league would be known as the Seattle Courier League, and featured mainly Japanese-American teams.  One standout player would be George Hirai who was recruited to play for the Enumclaw Silver Barons, a perennial title contender in the big Northwest League.  George returned in 1940.  Andy Shiga would be a member of the team for many years as a star back beginning when he was just 16-years old.  Shiga would go on to be a Seattle merchant creating Shiga Imports, a peace activist during the Vietnam War and helped organize the first University District Street Fair in 1970.  Andy passed away in 1993 as a U-District icon.

By 1940, the team had moved into the Seattle 160lb Community League where they found the competition very difficult.

In their final game of 1941, the Marmots fielded exactly 11 make-shift bodies for the game with Cleveland that ended in a 32-0 rout by the Athletic Club.  A week later, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor drawing the USA into World War II and out of fear, the government sent Japanese-Americans to internment camps ending the Marmots and other Japanese-American football clubs during the war.
