In 1943, Jimmy Mandas announced the West Seattle Yellowjackets and Seattle Shipbuilders teams would merge under the Seattle Ironworkers name as Isaacson Iron Works was the sponsor.  The Yellowjackets had won the Northwest championship of 1942.

When the 1943 season started up, Tacoma and Portland could not field teams so Seattle found itself as an independent.

The military refused permission for Walla Walla to fly up to Seattle for a game, and two-weeks after playing in Bremerton, the Mountaineers were refused permission to travel for the second game.
