The Spokane Business College team first entered the scene in 1896.
By 1898 it had a very vocal rival in the Blair
Business College and the rivalry was very heated in the newspaper
call-outs in trying to schedule games.
1896 Players included:
Miller (E), Kenman (T), Axtell (G), Goodwin (C), Carson (G), Greybill
(T), Rose (E), Fairweather (QB), Eastman (HB), Pernell (HB),
Stoddelman (FB/Capt), Wiscombe, Finnegan, Depew
Playing the high school freshmen in 1897, the Business College faced a
former teammates in Fairweather and Eastman was umpire.
1897 Players included:
Gootsell (C), Gordon (C), Rhodes (G), Redhead (G), Finnegan (T), Truax
(T), McKenna (E), Keenan (E), Rover (E), Jackson (HB), Rose (HB), Hughes
(FB), Wiscombe (QB/Capt)
The team was planning a coast trip for 1898 even after having not played
locally and refusing to "acknowledge" Blair Business as a team.
C. C. Holzell also coached a team at the same time called the "St.
Stephens Combination" team, and was charged with using Business College
and Gonzaga players against high school teams which he denied
1898 listed roster as: Arthur Lyonnais (Capt), W.S. Bruce, W.J.
Wilson, George Day, Charles O'Connor, George Kinney, Walter Vogel, Frank
Cushing, Patton, Charles Weisgerber, Haase, McGurren, Percy Powell and
Earl Browne, C.C. Holzell (HB) averaging 160lbs.
With the dissolving of the Spokane Athletic Club after the 1898 season,
the Business College team along with C.C. Holzell became the
Spokane YMCA team that would go on to play
against the rival Blair Business College.
