The Guardsmen, supported by the 149th Field Artillery division of the US Army were one of two teams in Tacoma representing the services. The Marine Leathernecks were the other team and between both teams, the best players of the Tacoma Athletic Club were spread across the rivals. Lloyd Berry returned a punt 60-yards for a TD against Aberdeen, but it wasn't enough as the Legion reeled off 3 touchdowns. Orren Gardner intercepted two Woodland Heights passes and returned both for scores in a rout. Ray Sulkosky and Johnny Newell would come over from College of Puget Sound to play against the Yellowjackets in the finale Sulkosky would go on to be an All-League performer and fan-voted Team MVP of the Olympia Athletics in 1935. A young Frank Stojak climbed aboard as well and would become a legend over the next decade, being named Player of the Year in 1940. "Red" Tatum scored 32 points to lead the Guardsmen for the season. Vern Votaw (19) and Gardner (18) followed. Gardner would elevate to play with Pacific Lutheran College the following season. The Tacoma Athletic Club returned in 1931 with many of the Guard and Marine stars on board.
