Walter Stuns
Fullback
South End Athletic Club
1929 - 1930
West Seattle Yellowjackets
1931 - 1934
After showing his wares in the Seattle Community League as
an All-Star fullback with the South End Athletic Club from
1929-1930, the little known Stuns was recruited to play for
the highly regarded West Seattle Yellowjackets. The
former Grover Cleveland high school basketball star made the 28-member team
for 1931 and the newly installed Notre Dame offense was a
perfect fit.
By 1933 "Piledriver" Stuns was the 2nd leading scorer
in the league behind backfield mate Louie Linstead who also
served as the team kicker. The dynamic fullback and
two-way linebacker helped lead the Yellowjackets to
dominance through the depression-era grid scene winning
outright championships in 1931, 1933 and 1934.
Always an outstanding athlete, the fullback donned
basketball gear in spring of 1934 for the Gilmore Steel Mill
team where he was now working in Portland, Oregon after
starring on the hardcourts for South Park near Seattle.
He made the train trek back-and-forth for Yellowjacket
football games in the fall/winter of the 1934 championship
season starting at fullback once again.
