William B. Goodwin
Tackle
Seattle Athletic Club "Blue
Diamonds"
"The Father of the Univerity of Washington" football
program he helped create in 1888, Goodwin did the same
with the Seattle Athletic Club in elevating the "Blue
Diamonds" to the Northwest throne in just three short
years.
The 1894 season saw Goodwin elected
captain, but he relinquished that role in favor of
coaching and playing tackle. He led a dominating
defense that kept the final four opponents scoreless and
yielded just 10 points on the season. The SAC
defeated the University team twice, rival Tacoma and won
the Great Northern Railway Silver Cup by defeating the
Multnomah Athletic Club which had held Northwest laurels
since 1891.
William Goodwin also paved the way
for teammates like George Russell to have outstanding
performances as rushers enroute to blowout victories of
24-0 and 48-0 during the season.
