Johnny Castagno
Issaquah Firemen/Alpines -
Fullback
1937 - 1941
One of the greatest
fullbacks of all time, Johnny Castagno was as hard-nosed and
hard charging a fullback as one could find in the semi pro
ranks. And he weighed in at less than 160 pounds. Castagno
played for the Issaquah Fireman, which later became the
Issaquah Alpines when the owner of Alpine Dairy purchased
new uniforms for the team. Castagno scored 15 touchdowns in
1939 after scoring 7 in each of the previous two seasons.
No team could match the rushing power Castagno brought to
the game. Castagno and the Firemen won 7 league titles from
1933 – 1941 rarely allowing a score while posting 59 shut
outs during that span.
Johnny's 15 rushing
touchdowns in 1939 stood as a Northwest record until it was
broken in 2004 by EJ Ash.
