The Stampede franchise joined the Oregon Football League in 2001 and
began a steady climb up the league standings over the 2001 and 2002
seasons before make a jump in year three featuring a deep run in the
OFL playoffs that was halted by the
Rogue Warriors 48-21 to finish 8-3 for the 2003 season.
From that point on, the Stampede never lost more than two regular
season league games in a year, were playoff-bound four-straight
seasons and appeared in the 2004 OFL Championship game against the
Eugene Dragons.
With a 32-20 overall record from 2001 - 2006, the Stampede changed
directions due in part to the Central Oregon ownership group
deciding to leave the sport. The Kuebler's, while owning the
Stampede raised money for the KIDS Center for intervention and
diagnostic service center for abused children through team functions
as part of their committment to the community.
Over the course of the Stampede it became known as having tough
defenses with numerous players being named to All-OFL Teams
including Defensive Players of the Year in 2001, 2002 and 2004, as
well as an Offensive Player of the Year choice in 2001 and 2006.
Bill Hoffman would hold the regional record for "oldest
player to record a rushing touchdown" in 2005 until it was
broken in 2009 by Wayne Palmer of the
Portland Monarchs. Hoffman was 45-years old at the time of
his record.
The team would be replaced by the
High Desert Lightning which would play from 2007 to 2011.
Among the Stampede who would continue on with the Lightning would be
4x All-OFL 1st Team linebacker Roy Price along with his linebacker
partner and 2004 OFL Defensive Player of the Year Dustin Tuggle,
All-OFL quarterback Chris Engles, 5-time All-OFL defensive back
Pedro Joyner, and 5-time All-OFL kicker Zack Gilst.
