With the struggles of the Moses
Lake/Columbia Basin Bulls from 2004-2005, a player-led
reorganization as the Riverhawks after Jared Crum left the Bulls.
Utilizing the 2006 season to get organized as an independent team
playing only three games, behind the scenes, Justin Whitaker led a
the charge to umbrella the team as a Washington State non-profit
entity hoping to attract better community support and sponsorship
opportunities. After dropping the first two games of the
season, the 'Hawks defeated the Oregon Football League's
Columbia River Coyotes based
in The Dalles, Oregon area 20-0 to complete the inaugural effort. Accepted into the Evergreen Football League, 2007 would be the first full season for Columbia Basin and the schedule was not kind with two of the best in Eastern Washington to start the season. Following six consecutive losses, the Riverhawks finally broke through in nail biting fashion "upsetting" the Okanogan Commandos 26-25 for their first EFL victory, before getting blasted by Kennewick's Tri City Knights to end a 1-7 season. Wide Receiver Emerson Fergueson would achive notice as the only member of the team honored in the post season as a GNFA All-Region Second Team selection after setting an EFL record for pass receptions in a season to topping his 2005 record of 50 receptions as a Bull. Roster numbers became a problem in 2008 just as it had plagued all other Moses Lake area teams over the years highlighted during a roadtrip to Lacey, Washington to take on the South Sound Shockers as the Evergreen League became the Washington Football League adding former Pacific Northwest Conference teams from the west to the lineup. Short-handed, an injury to the only quarterback to make the trip, and another injury to a wide receiver who stepped in under center led to a second-half forfeit of the game as the 'Hawks trailed 41-0. Getting healthy nearly a month later, Columbia Basin finally got a win over the Palouse Thunder 42-26. Much improved across the board in 2009, the Riverhawks posted only a 2-6 record, however, they had found much more offense and lost two tight games by a total of four points. Eight members of the team would be honored on All-League teams after the WFL season was complete. Two close losses to start the 2010 season had the 'Hawks looking to take off, but they could not find their stride falling to 0-6 on the season having to forfeit two games including the final regular season game. 2011 was a vitrual mirror season with forfeits in two of the final three sandwiching a 12-2 loss to Okanogan stretching the losing streak to 17-games. That streak would reach 24-games by the end of 2012, never scoring more than 7-points in each of the final four games. The streak would end to start the 2013 season as the Riverhawks finally broke through with a 29-16 win over the Snohomish County Vikings on April 6th, only to lose the next two and completely collapse as a franchise when May rolled around. Columbia Basin shut down, forfeiting the final four games on the schedule having played 50 games in total and coming away with only six wins. Compounding problems for the Riverhawks leading into 2013 was the formation of the Central Washington Lobos created by former Riverhawks assistant coach Don Johnson and four Riverhawk players. The Lobos would never make it to kickoff and the year ended with no team in Moses Lake once again. DO YOU HAVE INFORMATION TO CONTRIBUTE? CONTACT US! (email)
