The Eastern Washington Coyotes began formation in 2018 two years
following the shut down of the highly successful
Yakima Mavericks franchise which
operated for 12-seasons amassing a 72-42-1 record in the Valley.
To help kick that off, the Coyotes brought in former Maverick coach
Steve Davis. Locally, the Washington Football League had ceased operations and rather than try to muster an independent schedule, the Coyotes joined with the western teams in the Washington "State" Football League that had been created in 2017. The Coyotes looked every bit the dominant dog in the league going 5-1, the only blemish a loss to the Tulalip Hawks, which was avenged the following month 40-15. For the third time during the season the Coyotes would face the King County Predators having won both previous meetings by a combined 49-0. King County scored, but this was the WSFL Championship and the Coyotes won the title 35-14 in their first season of operation. Having proved themselves in the WSFL, the Coyotes were invited to join the Pacific Northwest Football League, a considerable step up in competition, but Yakima once again had a contender. Unfortunately before the season could get going, Covid-19 lockdowns eliminated most football in the States of Washington and Oregon for 2020 and parts of 2021. With the PNFL out of action in 2021 and eventually shutting down completely due to schools refusing to lease stadiums, the Coyotes tried to get back together and rejoin the WSFL which was playing games whereever they could find a field, which due to the continuing shut downs, changed from week-to-week. The scheduled May games were cancelled due to these restrictions, and by the time the Coyotes did get a game in June, the team that had won the WSFL in 2019 had trickled away. A loss to the Tacoma Sabers was backed by consecutive wins before a series of alternating forfeits and losses frustrated the eastern team trying to coordinate travel and stadiums to play the western opponents in an ever-changing environment. The Coyotes would only play five of the originally scheduled 10-games and even though qualifying for the playoffs at the end of July, the team could not carry enough men and forfeited two of the final three games. Feelers were put out for the 2022 season, but the continued uncertainty of the whims of the State of Washington regarding further Covid lockdowns led organizers to completely disband after only being able to play 11 games in three years.
