As the North American Football League, a New York-based league attempted to expand to the west, Helena was targeted in late 2000 with creation of a team to join the Big Sky Division with the Bozeman Kodiaks, Great Falls and a failed Butte venture that was to be the Montana Panthers.  Owner and coach Dale Talbott began with an aggressive plan to build a field and stadium for the Knights franchise but found resistance from the city and finding a home for practice and games began to be an early problem.

The Knights were unable to generate much success in the NAFL as the Colorado teams, former members of the 2000 Colorado Football Conference recruited to the NAFL proved unreliable in making the travel to Montana.

Much of the second half of the season was canceled and the Knights draw was diminished.  The team would shut down, but the players would find a new opportunity with a new ownership group that included former Bozeman Kodiak Hollis Huggins creating the Helena Titans to be a part of the more stable Rocky Mountain Football League. The Kodiaks and Great Falls Gladiators would try to stay with the NAFL for the 2002 season.  The Kodiaks would cease operations later in 2002 while the Gladiators rejoined the Helena rivalry in 2003 as members of the RMFL as well.
