Following the end of the 1928 Jefferson Park season, Cot Rice, former University of Washington star and original Boldt's Specials player and 1921 captain, and his star players joined forces with Broadway players as Madrona. Rice had gone on to play center for the USC Trojans in 1923 before returning to play for the West Seattle Yellowjackets in 1924 and "Jeffs" head coach in 1927. After an average start and a 3-2-2 inaugural season that featured former USC halfback Morris Badgro helping with coaching, Badgro would depart for a 10-year NFL career with the New York Yankees, New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers where he was a three-time all pro and became a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee in 1981. Replacing Badgro as coach of the Madrona team would be the legendary Leon Brigham. Rice would move into a managerial role during the 1930 run. Brigham and many of his former Garfield high school stars arrived at Madrona and took the Seattle Community League championship with a 6-0-2 record and were awarded the A.W. Leonard Trophy at a Dec 10th banquet. Following the 1930 season, many players stayed with the newly named Woodland Heights, which was a rebuild of the 1929 Ballard championship team. Brigham would continue to coach Garfield High and move over to the Atlantic Street "Italians" leading them to a 4-1-2 record in 1931. DO YOU HAVE INFORMATION TO CONTRIBUTE? CONTACT US! (email)
