In a Nov 7 article from the Oregon Daily Journal, Coach Rupert
proclaimed his Oregon City team the 1916 "Independent State Champions"
based on beating the Washington (Vancouver) Athletic Club 20-7, and
Multnomah only scoring a 13-6 victory in a game Rupert was acting as
head linesman of the officiating crew. The attempt to goad the
Winged M's, the team he captained in 1915, into a game did not succeed
