Record Book Section Dedicated to Steven M. Brainerd

The preceding section of records is dedicated to the memory of Steven Brainerd who passed away unexpectedly on December 10, 2020 in Tucson, Arizona while the initial 2021 reference guide was in final production.

Steven was instrumental in the format of the record section and inspired the long-term preservation of the history of Northwest Minor League/Semi-Pro football.  Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1948, his journey began with the collection of stamps, first day covers, baseball and football memorabilia which eventually led him to the semi pros and collecting game programs, rosters and statistics.  He co-authored the book Minor League Football, 1960-1985: Standings, Statistics and Rosters.  He was also a co-author of “Outsiders II, Minor League and Independent Football 1951-1985”

His avid collection and compilation of semi pro football stats and history, led to his induction into the American Football Association Hall of Fame, Class of 1987.

I had the immense pleasure of talking with Steven on the phone many times.  A ten-minute call could turn into two-hours as we talked football.  We exchanged game programs from each other’s’ collections and compared notes on stats and records and just thoroughly enjoyed the game of football from a historical perspective.  He helped guide me, and I kept him updated with the new Northwest records and stats I found to add to his listings of National Records that now reside with the AFA.  I am extremely grateful to have shared this passion with a guy who felt the same dedication to history. And my condolences to his son Greg whom Steven spoke of highly on every call as his ‘computer guru’.”
