When the Tacoma School Board voted to bar inter-city scholastic football
games, The Tahoma Athletic Club and the
Tacoma Wizards were formed to fill the gap. TAC became the "big"
team taking on college teams such as St. Martin's and the University of
Washington Freshmen, while the Wizards were the Junior squad taking on
area high schools not in the Tacoma School District. Some Wizards
were under 18-years old.
At season end E.T. Bates selected his All-Star Tacoma team which
included Earl Rushmer and Paul Shager. Shager would get a chance
to play with the Tahoma squad.
1914 Players included: Masterson, Joe Crumb (T), Von Fossen (FB), Paul
Shager, Earl Rushmer (G/FB), Sweeney (E), Wesser (C), Roper (G), Reed
(T), Puddicombe (E), Walter Padelford (T/HB), Carlson (E), Parker
(QB/E), Griffiths (HB), Robson (HB), Milligan (C), Finnigan (T), Reisch
(QB), Halley (HB), Wingard (HB/P)
The School Board lifted the ban on inter-city games at Stadium High in
September of 1915, but the Pacific Amateur Association put pressure on
club teams and virtually took away their ability to schedule scholastic
teams, a move which ended the Wizards after one season.
Many of the former Wizard players would surface with the 1916
South Tacoma Athletic Club, while others
including Paul Shager returned to high school, Shager becoming an
all-star baseball player, playing in the semi-pro ranks and eventually
becoming a manager.
