Frank Clary was announced to be leaving the University team to coach Rainier District for the 1928 season. Following him would be Tubby Grainger, Fritz Prosperi and Loren Sheehan, while others would disperse to Ballard. University would not place a team in the Seattle Community League for 1928. Former University of Washington halback, three-time letterman and 1921 captain Ray Eckmann, UW assistant coach and Freshman team mentor, sponsored the team in September of 1929 along with North End district merchants and took the University Athletic Club to the Seattle Community League championship with an unefeated 8-0 run. Johnny Dahlquest and Louie Linstead finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in voting for the O.D. Fisher Honorary Award behind Doug James of Ballard as the best players in the league. Linstead would return to the University of Washington the next season briefly before spending the next five seasons with the West Seattle Yellowjackets. After winning the league crown, Eckmann was faced with a near complete rebuild of the team after a large portion, including his entire backfield, moved on to other opportunities. A late 1930 loss to once beaten Georgetown in a de facto playoff game cost the team a shot at back-to-back championships giving way to Leon Brigham's Madrona Athletic Club. The loss was a killer due to University playing four tie games to Madrona's two, and Georgetown's three on the year. Future Hall of Famer Elmo Hudgens began his semi-pro journey with the 1929 team as a 17-year-old reserve defensive tackle, while Eckmann's business partner Carroll Martin played center. "Martin & Eckmann's" men's haberdashery was in business for over 50 years on the Ave in Seattle's U-District. Eckmann would be inducted into the University of Washington Hall of Fame in 1982.
Coach Eckmann instructs Louie Linstead on passing technique as University prepares for the Championship game against Ballard in 1929. After leading University to an 11-1-4 record over the 1929 and 1930 seasons, Eckmann would focus on his business as the President-Elect of the Seattle clothiers representative. The University team would not enter a team in the league, and was replaced by the West Woodland Heights Athletic Club, formerly Ballard Commercial Club which it played under from 1931-1933 before being rekindled by former player Charlie Durgan (1927-1930) in 1934 as Wiseman's U-District. Entering the 1934 season, Charlie Durgan announced former University of Washington end Dave Nisbet would coach the Wiseman's U-District entry in the Puget Sound League. Wiseman's became the new backer of the "old Ballard team", the U-District merchant deciding to dabble in football himself once again. Durgan would lead Wiseman's until 1936 when he moved over to manage the Doghouse Bowwows for the 1937 and 1938 seasons. Durgan would bring Nisbet back as coach for the '38 season. Durgan would serve as President of the Seattle Umpires Association starting in 1943 and would be awarded the Charles E. Sullivan Award in 1954 after 20-years coaching Northwest AAU basketball and baseball teams and being a prominent Seattle contributor in AAU and Little League activities outside of his community league football career.
