The 1923 franchise featured both senior and junior teams playing weight-limited divisions. Carl Knoblauch was the standout in the opener against the Asahi and all through the season. With his debut in 1928, future Hall of Famer Walt Stuns would help lead South End to victory and consecutive league all-star berths before being recruited to the West Seattle Yellowjackets. Against the Taiyos, Stuns was responsible for all points with a 55-yard dash, a scoring toss to Peterson and two PAT tosses. Stuns and other members of the Community League would take on the Yellowjackets on Dec 9th with no practice time together. The 'Jackets swamped the Stars 31-0. Harland Eastwood played the guard position with only one arm. Stuns again led the team during the 1929 campaign as he scored five touchdowns in the final two games, more points himself than the entire team scored in the previous five games combined. As 1930 was dawning, the team was rebranded as Georgetown and featured a new coach in Francis Walterskirchen. Same song in 1930 as Walt Stuns provided all of the scoring fireworks for Georgetown in 1930. Georgetown would also not have their goal line crossed through seven games, though three ended as 0-0 ties. The championship game would come down to Georgetown and Madrona in a classic battle for the Community League crown. Madrona won the title in a 16-6 game, but it was Howie Dowdell who brought the crowd to a roar with a 72-yard punt return for the Colonels score. Stuns would be half the offense on the basketball court one week after the close of football as South Park scored 42 points...Stuns providing 19. No surprise as Walt earned all-league honors once again. With his domination for three consecutive seasons, the Yellowjackets made the call and brought Stuns to the "big" team of Seattle along with Coach Walterkirchen, where they would help claim three of the next four titles in the Northwest Football League for West Seattle. Georgetown and Rainier would combine going into the 1931 season as the league shrank from seven teams to five. Another former Gonzaga player would step into the coaching role as Matt Bross, former Honolulu All-Stars head coach, and NFL player in 1926 and 1927 with the Los Angeles Wildcats and Green Bay Packers. Starr Sutherland would take the reigns as head coach in 1932 along with taking over Cleveland High. Sutherland would coach Brewster's Cigar squad in 1935. His son Starr Sutherland Jr., a standout Washington football player would be killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge Jan 4, 1945. American Legion Post and Auxillary #227 in Seattle, Washington is named after the fallen hero. In the 1933 win over Olympic Heights, Weinker picked up a fumble and returned it 65-yards for a TD to go along with Stan Rich returning an INT 40-yards for the first score. O'Dea, Garfield, Franklin, Cleveland, Broadway and West Seattle players made up the core of the team in 1933. After struggling to one win over the 1932 and 1933 seasons, South End acquired a sponsor in Happy-Peppy Hemrich Brewing Company and a new coach in Stan "Stochie" Ralkowski. Again, the team struggled without a win in 1934 including a crushing loss in Ellensburg 34-0. Happy-Pepply did not renew sponsorship duties and Ralkowski utilized his New York Bakery as the headline sponsor for the 1935 season. In an exciting "upset" during the second half of the season, the high flying Uptowners were grounded by the Bakery defense in a 0-0 tie throwing the 1935 league title run into chaos. Bob Robinson was a 1936 phenom kicking the ball. In one October game, he launched a kickoff 73-yards through the end zone, then punted 72-yards and 68-yards to go along with excellent offense and defense against the Italian Club. After half-a-decade of one-win or less each year and only one championship game appearance in eleven years, the multi-name franchise would again change names as the Doghouse Club became the 1937 backer of the franchise and Joe Murray, quarterback took the reigns as coach. Doghouse opened the season with back-to-back 7-0 losses in three days and six consecutive offensive shut-outs before exploding for two wins and 26 points. The streak would be halted by snow forcing the postponing of the National Guard showdown, and after three weeks off, won a sluggish 6-0 game over the Blackhawks. With momentum fully stalled, the Guardsmen kicked a field goal, the first successful one of the year in the community league, to take the championship following the amazing second half of the season put together by the Bowwows. Babe Vallier was a controversy during the season as both Doghouse and Ranch claimed he was on their team, and he did in fact play games for both during the 1937 season. Hall of Famer Elmo Hudgens would also migrate between teams after the start of the season before settling with the Bowwows. Once again, the team changed names as the Knights of Columbus became the 1938 sponsor and former three-year University of Washington letterwinner, 2x All-American and 1933 Chicago Cardinal (Bears) end Dave Nisbet, a Chehalis, Washington native stepped in as coach. Joe Murray retired after a year with the Bowwows and two years as coach of Wiseman's U-District/Elks 92. For the second year in a row, the Artillery Guardsmen would oust the Caseys from championship contention. 1939 would mark the end of the Community League due to a lack of teams. The remaining teams would be spread between the "big" Northwest Football League teams, and the weight restricted "fast" 160-lb league. George Moline would join the White Center Hornets as a halfback. Buck Frederick would join the Renton Rams while Horsey Edwards would find playing time with the West Seattle Yellowjackets. DO YOU HAVE INFORMATION TO CONTRIBUTE? CONTACT US! (email)
