Started in 2022 by Antony Cowan for the newly formed Gridiron Development League Impact North Division, the West Sound Rebels looked to bring Tacoma back since the fracture and inconsistency of the 2020-2021 covid-restricted seasons in Washington.

The Rebels debuted against the Everett Royals who had made their initial foray onto the scene as a member of the Washington State League a year prior. The Rebels proved too formidable and began a 5-game undefeated run to start the season. Tripped up by the Washington Warriors, another new team they had defeated earlier, West Sound regrouped to win four more games leading to the Division title rematch with the Warriors.

Leading 27-20 early in the 3rd quarter, a bizarre series of events began with a roughing call on the West Sound defense then led to the Warriors team leaving the sidelines and the officials calling the game with 10:10 to go in the 3rd. The Rebels were awarded the game by virtue of the score at stoppage and advanced to the Western Region Division game at California's Inglewood Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks offense scored seemingly at will in the first half and the Rebels could not recover falling 38-18.

Quarterback Jacob Taase was named the GDFL Offensive Player of the Year and placed himself in the regional record books with 38 passing touchdowns on the season including a 7 TD performance on July 30th. Tyquan Bowie led a contingent of Rebel players to the Vegas All-Pro game where he was named game MVP.

The Rebels took the next step in 2023 with the Warriors out before the season started. Winning the North and earning home-field, the Rebels defeated Inglewood and advanced to the GDFL Championship against the legendary Racine Raiders in their 70th season out of Wisconsin. The Raiders pulled away in the second half for a 27-18 win in Washington D.C. for the GDFL crown.

Early in October 2023 it was announced via Facebook the Rebels franchise was pulling the plug with a stakeholder vote to merge with the Grit City Knights.
