The Guardians were created by Shane Stephenson and Kendall Stewart in 2019 as a new franchise for the Rocky Mountain League, eight years after the Helena Bearcats took their final snap.

Assistant Coach Doug O'Dell had been involved with the Helena Titans and Big Sky Avalanche franchises through the 2000's bringing his knowledge and experience to the Guardians.

Following the 2019 season, Covid-19 lockdowns ended football in Montana for the year. The Guardians went through inner turmoil leading up to the 2021 season and the Montana Dawgs dropped out before the season kicked off. A week one loss to Flathead brought the internal issues to the surface and the "Guardians" planned to shut down the season. A break-away group opted to play the Summit Valley Kings and Wasatch Revolution in an efffort to salvage the season but were not "Guardians" instead playing as the Capital City Cobras. Following the 48-9 loss to the Kings and the 58-0 blow out to the Revolution, neither the Guardians nor the Cobras would play again.
