The Colts were started by by Tim & Chris Reynolds in 2009 as
an expansion team to the Cascade Football League with a number of former
players in the Valley Mustangs organization. After the
biggest blowout in team history against the Eagles, the Colts pulled out
of the July 18 game with area independent rival Pierce County Bengals.
Knocking out the Tacoma Invaders in round one of the CFL playoffs, the
Colts found themselves no match for the Ravens who went on to win the
CFL Championship.
An expected contender
for the CFL Championship, the Colts found themselves clinging to a
fractured league after the Ravens, Stallions, Thunder and Eagles pulled
out to form the Western Washington Football Association. It's hand
forced, the Colts eventually committed to joining the WWFA as well.
The move was definitely a disruption as the undefeated Colts were
manhandled by 20 players from Portland and lost by 13 to the Northwest
Terminators, an independent team brought in to replace the folded Tacoma
Warriors. The Colts took 14 players to Las
Vegas and made a valiant go against the Yuma Blitz before falling 12-8.
With the formation of the Pacific Football League in 2011, the Colts
made the jump to join the Northwest elite teams and immediately found
themselves in the hunt for the inaugural PFL North crown. Taking
an overtime win at home against Yakima, South King avenged an early
season loss to the Mavericks, but found themselves unable to repeat the
feat in the PFL North Championship game when the fell to the Bears to
bookend the 2011 season with 2 losses to Kitsap. The
Bears shut down operations prior to the 2012 season and the Colts looked
for the open door to be their ticket to another PFL North title
appearance. However, four straight losses to open the season
spelled doom for the Colts hopes as they only managed wins against
independent Pierce County and a collapsing Clark County Vipers team.
2013 was again a season of high hopes as long-time minor league veteran
Keith Jones, tired of the Tacoma Cobras experiment was brought in to
coach the Colts. He brought with him other former Cobras coaches
and expected to sign on a large number of the formerly "professional"
Cobras stars in pursuit of the Colts first championship. The
season was a flip from the 2012 season with the Colts at 7-2 entering
the playoffs. However, Coach Jones would be bitten by his former
squad and long-time Colts nemesis, the Stallions. Seattle bounced
the Colts from the playoffs in the opening round.
Out for revenge, the 2014 season opened with the Stallions and a win for
the Colts, but a solid run would be derailed first by the Bulldogs and
then by the Stallions. The Colts would have to find a way to beat
the Stallions in the semi-finals of the playoffs, which by a 22-16
margin they did. Ironically, it was the same score only flipped,
that cost the Colts it's first ever championship as the Portland Raiders
took the title. 2014 featured a new gunslinger in the Northwest as
the Colts brought in
Adam Kruse at quarterback acconting for 22 touchdowns, after
having played for the Cobras (2009) and overseas. Kruse would win
Player of the Year honors in 2015 piloting the Stallions to the GNFA
Championship.
The Colts shut down following the season to be replaced by the
South Sound Nighthawks. |
