John Phillips - NWFL Historical Archives

The Renton Ravens were formed in 2002 playing in independent schedule by George Jackson and Kevin Kinsey and were formally accepted into the Northwest League in 2003 going on to be one of the longest continually operating franchises in Washington.

A perennial middle-of-the-road team in the NWFL, the Ravens were routinely in each game, suffering the rare big losses, and on the verge of playing spoiler and making the playoffs.  Unfortunately, they just could not get over the hump into the top-4 teams.

Most notable player is running back EJ Ash, who burst onto the scene in 2003 sweeping league MVP honors.  Ash was acquired by Sam Adams and the Eastside Hawks (rumored to have been promised NFL tryouts) where he was featured in the Hawks championship run.  Ash returned to the Ravens in 2006 again being tabbed a 1st team all-NWFL performer after playing in the spring for the Seattle Stallions.  Ash would be inducted into the GNFA Hall of Fame in 2024.

2009 brought the Ravens to the Cascade Football League where they immediately ascended to the top of the hapless pile of teams like the Pirates, Eagles and Invaders only to battle an NWFL nemesis in the Seattle Stallions who also made the jump and a group of former West Sound Saints now steering the Kitsap County Bears.

After cruising through the CFL, the Ravens found themselves on the field again with the undefeated Seattle Stallions.  The Ravens were 0-3 all time versus the Stallions in the NWFL and were on the losing end of the regular season matchup.  However, the Ravens shocked the Stallions and the CFL by taking the title to win their first ever championship and only their 2nd winning season in franchise history.  A long 10-month season finally came to an end with a 14-12 win over the Snohomish Vikings in the annual Toys For Tots charity game, avenging a season opening loss to the Vikings nearly 8 months earlier.

2010 started with non-league splits with the Portland Monarchs and South Sound Shockers before losing back-to-back games against the Stallions and Colts.  The Ravens, along with four other Cascade League members left the CFL for the newly formed Western Washington Football Alliance after issues cropped up between the owners.

The Ravens franchise enjoyed moderate success in the WWFA from 2011-2018 going 49-41 reaching the playoffs each season and the 2013 title game.  Following the WWFA title game appearance the Ravens won 8-games in three straight seasons, and barely missing a fourth in 2017 finishing 7-6.

After a disappointing 2018 season, the Ravens were called on to help resurrect the Northwest Football League and in 2019 Renton went "home" were they started back in 2003 with familar foes Pierce County Bengals and Washington Cavaliers.  The Ravens broke even at 5-5 and when Covid-10 shut down the State of Washington, Renton and the NWFL followed suit.

When the Ravens closed the book, the franchise had played 195 games, one of the Top-10 for most games played in Northwest history and in 2019 was the 4th longest operating franchise in the region at 18-years behind the Bengals (32) Idaho Mustangs (24) and Willamette Valley/Portland Raiders (19).  Following the 2022 season, all four aforementioned teams were no longer in operation, a testament to the dedication of the Ravens staff for maintaining the team for nearly two decades.  The Raiders did make a return for the 2024 season and shut down again after a 9-1 season.
