At the encouragement of Dick Seuss, Dan Cable and Don Purser, former
Northwest League veterans created the Eagles to be based out of Port
Townsend, Washington as an inaugural team for the Pacific Northwest
Football Conference, a new spring-oriented league.
The Eagles found the sledding tough that first year finishing 0-6
with a forfeit awarded when the
Lightning were suspended, but did place Aaron Grady at defensive
end, and Brian Savage, a kick returner on the 1st Team
All-Conference selections.
Seuss would break away from the PNFC after one season and create a
rival league in the Cascade Football League and the Eagles followed
as a second-year team while the other three teams were first-year
ventures. The Eagles split with the CFL opponents to go 3-3
during the regular season while also grabbing a season-opening win
over former PNFC opponent Northwest
and non-league loss to Willamette Valley.
After a playoff win, the second-year Eagles would face the
first-year Whatcom County Raiders
for the inaugural CFL championship. The Raiders won the
rubber-match and the title 24-14. The Eagles ventured into a
post-season against Northwest League champion
King County only to get blown out 70-0
in what was called an MLFA playoff game. Next came the North
American Football League, attempting to generate a foothold in the
Northwest, invited the Eagles to play the Willamette Valley Raiders
in the NAFL playoffs. The Raiders had already defeated the
Eagles, and declined the invitation resulting in an NAFL awarded
forfeit to the next round of playoffs. Faced with a
cross-country expedition to Ontario, Canada to play the London
Silverbacks, Olympic Peninsula opted to forfeit that round due to
extreme expense to make the trip ending the season at 5-6.
Brian Savage would be named CFL Player of the Year from the running
back position.
The 2008 season featured four victories over the
Thunder and the first year
Pirates sandwiched between five
blow out losses to finish 4-6. The downhill slide continued
over the next three seasons as Olympic Peninsula went 4-25 from
2009-2011. The 2009 season was noteably bad as the Eagles gave
up 446 points in eight games, one of the eight-worst seasons
defensively in Northwest history. In the middle of that
streak, the Cascade League imploded, and again Dick Seuss created a
new league called the Western Washington Football Association that
took all of the CFL teams with the exception of the
Pacific Northwest Wildcats after
the 2010 season had kicked off.
2012 featured new color schemes, released schedules, changed
schedules, folded teams and suspended teams creating a chaotic May
and June. The Eagles went away from their long-time silver and
maroon colors, to green, white and silver for 2012. With a 5-2
record, the Eagles finale was canceled when the
Eruption franchise collapsed, but
Olympic Peninsula shockingly forfeited the playoff game with
Renton on July 28th just two weeks
after defeating the Ravens 22-6.
Struggling with roster numbers, the Eagles chose not to return in
2013 and a failed attempt to form the
Peninsula Seminoles as their
replacement took place between October 2012 and March 2013.
With neither Olympic Peninsula returning nor the Seminoles team able
to get off the ground, Dick Seuss and Larry Moody created an 8-man
league believing finding quality linemen would be less of an impact
to smaller market teams. This led Ronald Wright, TJ Greene and
Michael McMahan, who planned to coach with the Seminoles to form the
Neah Bay Eagles 8-man team for
play in 2013 using the "new" colors the Olympic Peninsula Eagles
introduced prior to the 2012 season, the green and whites.
That Eagles team would return to the 11-man game in 2017 as members
of the Washington State Football League. The Oly-Pen Eagles
and Neah Bay Eagles could be considered the "same" organization, but
due to the complexities involving how the teams stopped, started,
and were almost replaced by the Seminoles, We have separated the
organizations at the point the "Eagles" became an 8-man team.
